The latest animal cruelty investigation into the foie gras industry by the Animal Protection and Rescue League can be seen at www.stopforcefeeding.com.
I have personally investigated the main U.S. foie gras producers--located in CA and NY--dozens of times since 2002. I took the attached photo inside Hudson Valley Foie Gras just last year. I have also investigated egg, veal and dairy farms. Foie gras production is the worst form of factory farming because it requires force feeding ducks massive quantities of genetically modified corn to grossly enlarge their livers to over 10 times their normal size.
After 2-3 weeks of being force fed, the ducks have difficulty standing, walking and breathing. Many succumb before the slaughter, and I have seen trash barrels full of dead ducks in each of these factory farms.
The ducks in every foie gras farm universally try to get as far from humans as possible, huddling in the corners of their pens as a worker grabs each one and jams a large metal pipe down his throat, pumping up to a pound of corn into him. This would be like a 200 pound human being forced to eat 20 pounds of pasta in one sitting.
Some chefs who witness the force feeding claim it appears non-injurious. What these chefs fail to recognize is that they are witnessing ONE force feeding session. Yet the product they serve is the result of about NINETY force feedings of this same massive quantity of food over 2-3 weeks.
Ducks rescued from these force feeding facilities require intensive care and rehabilitation before they are able to eat again on their own. Necropsies on ducks who did not survive the force feeding process show that their livers are distended and that they suffered tremendously.
Any restaurant that serves foie gras should be boycotted as a purveyor of extreme animal cruelty.
