We're being bombarded by media messages and media devices that constantly fill our lives and landscapes. In order to be active, strong members of our communities, we need basic media literacy for everyone.
We need to collect as many signatures as possible to tell our funders and elected officials that Basic Media Literacy for all New Yorkers is a critical need.
Basic Media Literacy for ALL New Yorkers
Dear Speaker Quinn,
Everyday, our airwaves, our subways, our buildings, our TVs in our homes are clogged with media messages that are ravenously competing for our attention. Why? Because they are trying to separate us from our hard-earned dollars. New Yorkers all across the city are faced with increasing debt, trash littering our sidewalks, ads plastered on every surface.
The Kaiser Family Foundation reports that media literacy can address the financial struggles with rising personal debt, the prevalence of violence in our neighborhoods, the growing obesity epidemic as well as the rampart use of drugs and alcohol.
As the most populous city in the United States, we need to set an example for the rest of the country by implementing a city-wide initiative for basic media literacy for ALL New Yorkers. Please join us in helping New York take control of the influence that the media surrounding our lives has.
