Why This Is Important

Coastal communities are ideal locations for single-use plastic bag bans as plastic pollution in the ocean is especially hard to address. As you read this, there is a growing mass of plastic trash circulating around the Pacific Gyre in the Pacific Ocean !

Since plastic does not biodegrade it remains in the ocean for hundreds of years where it breaks down into tiny particles that resemble plankton.  Fish and other marine life mistake “plastic plankton” for food and thus, plastic enters our food web.

The idea behind banning single use plastic bags is to promote the use of re-useable shopping bags.  Please help ban the single-use plastic bags in Humboldt County by supporting this petition with your signature.

Ban use of single use plastic bags at retailers in Humboldt County

Greetings,

I just signed the following petition addressed to: Humboldt County Board of Supervisors.

----------------
I have written this letter to express my concern over the far-reaching damage caused by single-use plastic bags, and a solution. While these bags are designed to be disposable and used for only minutes, they last for thousands of years since they are not biodegradable, and, are composed of petroleum which takes 50-70 million years to form.

Something is wrong here.  Single-use plastic bags clog sewer lines, litter our roadways, beaches and ocean killing wildlife and entering the marine food chain.  In a coastal community like ours, it is especially important to reduce our plastic consumption and litter

I am requesting that the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors consider adopting an ordinance to ban single use plastic bags in Humboldt County. Through this ordinance, and education efforts, it is my hope that our citizens will change their habits and start shopping with reusable bags. It has worked in other communities and can work here.

----------------

Sincerely,

[Your name]
