Ban NC Animal Gas Chambers

Ban NC Animal Gas Chambers

The Issue

North Carolina has 20 counties out of 100 that currently use the gas chamber to kill stray animals. These animal control centers are responsible for a kill rate ratio of 85% or higher. North Carolina follows euthanasia methods that are approved by the American Veterinary Medical Association(AVMA), the Humane Society of the United States(HSUS) and the American Humane Association(AHA). Two of these organzations have proclaimed the usage of animal gas chambers as "inhumane". The gas chamber stands for an outdated and cruel solution to control the current pet population of our state.

With the death of Davie's Law in the legislature, the requirement of a new bill is necessary in order to bring about and discontinue the operations of the animal gas chamber within NC state borders. This petition allows the voice of NC residents to be heard in order to represent a new bill to be filed in the year of 2012. The citizens provide with tax dollars all funding of the gas chambers. According to the American Humane Association, costs between EBI-injection at an average of $2.29 per animal versus gas chamber procedure at an average of $4.98 per animal. This is a considerable savings per animal when NC states 250,000 animals were killed in 2010.

You must be a NC resident in order to sign this petition. We also urge you to write a letter to your NC Senator and Representative and share your voice to end the operations of the animal gas chambers.

Not only has it been proven that the animal gas chamber brings upon the animals excessive amounts of pain, torture and anxiety, but this method is also very dangerous to the employees as well. Leaks are common during operation and explosions have occurred as well. All electrical components are to be warrantied against explosions when exposed with toxic flammable gases; however, several exhaust blower fans are operating now in several shelters with no such warranties. In fact, the mfg of the exhaust fans state no warranty coverage at all if component is installed with equipment using flammable gases. Rubber seals are weathered, allowing leaks to occur. This results in employees health risks and prolonging the deaths of the animals.
