Declawing causes great pain. Many cats end up with their toe end trying to grow back, but it is always gnarled bone that pokes out and causes terrible pain. Not to mention, declawing removes their front breaks to prevent falls!! And they no longer have the weapons they need to defend themselves in a fight! This is SO totally inhumane and cruel!! It is unnecessary! It is only done to suit some displeasure in us humans. We do not have the right to alter their lives in such a cruel way, just because we don't like the clawing of some inanimate object!! Cats CAN be trained to not claw people and furniture. And all one has to do is buy several cardboard scratchers, and place them near things the cat WAS clawing. They MUCH prefer the cardboard to just about everything else, with exception of trees. We need to stop this unnecessary and cruel practice.
Ban declawing in California
Dear Decision Maker,
We do not declaw cats to help cats. We declaw cats to suit our own human needs. It is wrong. Declawing leaves a cat without their primary weapon to protect themselves from other cats and animals. It is literally taking away their front disc brakes, so they cannot stop themselves from a fall they slip into. When they are asleep on the top of a chair or couch, and they start sliding, they just fall. But if they have been asleep, their reflexes are slower to kick in, and their fall may not be upright, and they may fall against something that could injure them.
We do not have the right to remove their claws so they can't defend themselves properly. We don not have the right to take away their ability to stop a bad fall. We do not have the right to cause them the arthritis that most of them end up with. We do not have the right to do this to them, as it often causes bone to grow, twistingly back out of the ends of their toes - - - - causing great pain as it punctures and works its way through to the surface and beyond. If we care for them, and truly love them, we would not cause this pain and agony. The alternatives work too well, for this to be any kind of an answer.
Scratching posts covered in carpet or jute, and cardboard scratchers do very well, and satisfy a cat's need to sharpen their claws and just scratch. The cardboard scratchers cost a tiny fraction of the posts, and are often more loved than the posts are. Whey would anyone harm their cat when it isn't necessary. Declawing just causes worse problems than the original excuse is for declawing them. We need to stop this cruel practice!!!!!
