Badger Auckland Council to Help Make Auckland a Fairtrade Super City

Badger Auckland Council to Help Make Auckland a Fairtrade Super City

The Issue

Fair trade is an alternative model that puts people back at the heart of the transaction guaranteeing a better deal for farmers and workers and great products for consumers. Auckland is New Zealand’s largest city with significant purchasing power, let’s work together to tip the balance in favour of more ethical and sustainable purchasing so we can always enjoy the great products that Auckland offers …with a healthy conscience.

5 steps must be completed for Auckland to be declared a Fairtrade city: Local council passes a resolution supporting Fairtrade, and agrees to serve Fairtrade products (for example, in meetings, offices and canteens). A range of Fairtrade products are readily available in the area’s retail outlets (shops, supermarkets, newsagents and petrol stations) and served in local catering outlets (cafés, restaurants, pubs). Local workplaces and community organisations (places of worship, schools, universities, colleges and other community organisations) support Fairtrade and use Fairtrade products whenever possible. Media coverage and events raise awareness and understanding of Fairtrade across the community. A local Fairtrade steering group is convened to ensure the Fairtrade Town campaign continues to develop and gain new support.

Lets badger the Mayor of Auckland Council (Len Brown) to pursue the first step - passing a resolution supporting Fairtrade and agreeing to serve Fairtrade products.
