NO to bauxite mining at Guyra

NO to bauxite mining at Guyra

The issue

Australian Bauxite Limited wants to mine bauxite at Guyra. They have already drilled 63 holes around Guyra. These sites are within the catchment of the Gara River, which is the water supply for Guyra and Armidale. The Guyra-Ben Lomond plateau has mostly been cleared for Grazing, and any further activities from mining would decimate the already fragile remnant vegetation and fauna. The highland wetlands of Little Llangothlin and Llangothlin Lagoons are also at risk, these wetlands are vulnerable from mining practices.

I think the residients of Guyra, Ben Lomond should, not look to the companies for the answer but research the internet and see other communities affected from Bauxite mining. There are various cases
that deal with the impact of Bauxite Mining.  Guyra district is renowned for its clean air, productive grazing country, and fertile soils. Bauxite Mining, like all forms of mining is a dirty procress. The Bauxite dust creates health hazards as in the case with Linden, with an increase in health issues (respiratory etc), resulting in boon conditons for Pharmacists.

* remnant vegetation within district, and the critically endangered New England Peppermint (Eucalyptus Nova-Anglica) in drill locations ( source: Cunninghamia - Ajournal of plant ecology for easter Australia )
* vulnerable/endangered flora and fauna within region (source: Cunninghamia - Ajournal of plant ecology for easter Australia)
*Create health hazards (particularly hazards related to bauxite dust) as experienced in Linden (source below)
*Damage Potential to water supply/ Agricultural Land/ Wildlife/ Vegetation
*In some cases, usually in colder regions (wonder if case for Guyra- Benlomond area) such as Hungary, the mining may be deep enough to interfere with the water table.
*resultant soil erosion means that it may be very difficult for vegetation, whether natural or crops, to re-establish itself.

The Sources to back, why Bauxite Mining should not be allowed in the Guyra District
