Ask Your Congressperson To Protect Habitat for Humanity Mortgages

The Issue

If you have 2 minutes to spare, you can help save Habitat mortgages.

In 2008, Congress passed the SAFE Act (H.R. 4400) to protect homeowners from unfair mortgage lending. The bill was intended to regulate commercial lenders only. But some states are mistakenly imposing major burdens on local Habitat for Humanity affiliates that were never intended for nonprofit groups like Habitat, such as expensive bonding and licensing requirements.

Many local Habitat affiliates simply cannot continue serving families in need if these onerous requirements remain.

Some states have already exempted local Habitat affiliates from SAFE Act requirements, but in other states, time is running out.

Fortunately, Rep. Heath Shuler of North Carolina has stepped forward with a simple and effective fix. In a single stroke, the Shuler bill will provide national clarification, allow states to protect Habitat mortgages, and allow affiliates to continue their important work—but only if we ensure it has enough votes to pass.

Please take 2 minutes to ask your Congressperson to support this critical, common-sense effort.

Thank you for helping to save Habitat mortgages and for all that you do.
