Ward 5 is the only ward in the District of Columbia that does not have a middle school.  The transition to K—8 at seven of our eight elementary schools was initiated without providing sufficient physical facilities, resources, and teaching staff to accommodate the required curriculum established for D.C. middle school students (MSS).  To name a few:  no athletic facilities, gymnasiums, science labs, language and pre-algebra teachers, insufficient classroom space for such classes, insufficient libraries, inadequate security personnel and cameras.

Why is Ward 5 the only ward without a middle school?

Greetings Chancellor Rhee,

The Residents and Friends of Ward 5 present you with the opportunity to create a state of the art Middle School at the Brookland Elementary site for the 2010—2011 school year. Middle School students (MSS) of Ward 5 deserve the same educational opportunities and resources as other DC students.

Many of our MSS cannot get into some DCPS high schools because they have not had access to certain required courses. In a time of budget cut backs it is not fiscally sound to duplicate a middle school curriculum at 7 different sites when it could be provided at one or two sites.

Also, while you continue to expand other middle school programs throughout the city, such as the 6th grade academy at Jefferson, our students have fallen behind. This is the second year that Ward 5 MSS have not had full access to language and pre-algerbra teachers, appropriate facilities such as; science and language labs, gymnasiums and athletic fields, and appropriate middle school library facilities and books.

I support the Ward 5 Council on Education in its efforts to level the educational playing field so that all DC children get a quality education. Give Ward 5 Students a Middle School!
