Please Investigate the New England Primate Research Center

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am deeply disappointed to learn that the USDA has decided against investigating the New England Primate Research Center following the death of a primate in Southborough, Massachusetts earlier this year. During a June 29 inspection by the USDA, the animal's corpse was discovered on the floor of a cage that had been sent through a cage-washing system nearly three weeks earlier. The facility had failed to properly observe the primate and remove him from the cage before cleaning.

The Southborough facility, owned and operated by Harvard Medical School, controls nearly 2000 primates. While a warning has been issued, the USDA owes it to these innocent prisoners to thoroughly investigate this facility and ensure that humane practices are the rule, not the exception.

Like millions of compassionate individuals worldwide, I am firmly opposed to vivisection and animal experimentation. If the United States refuses to ban such torture, its agencies must, at the very least, mandate the most ethical practices and stringently enforce them. With such aims in mind, I respectfully urge you to investigate the New England Primate Research Center as soon as possible.

Thank you,
