The United States has renewed its support for international justice, and now is the time for it to take concrete action to support the ICC.

On June 27, the ICC issued arrest warrants for Col. Muammar Gaddafi and the other masterminds in his family of the recent attacks against Libyan civilians. The ICC investigated in Libya because the UN Security Council, including the US, unanimously asked it to.

Libya is under an obligation to hand the suspects over to the Court. That won’t happen without concerted international action. In the US national interest, the Obama administration should work with its allies to make sure that the suspects of the Libya atrocities are arrested and brought to The Hague.

Please Support the ICC on Libya and Help Arrest Gaddafi

Dear President Obama,

As a supporter of human rights and international justice, I wish to thank you for your leadership in bringing the United States to a closer and more cooperative relationship with the International Criminal Court (ICC), and I ask you to continue your support to the Court as it seeks justice for atrocity crimes. In particular, I hope that the US will act with its allies to achieve the arrest of the suspects for whom arrest warrants were recently issued for committing atrocities in Libya.

July 17 is International Justice Day, an annual opportunity to celebrate international justice as well as to advance the world's efforts to end impunity for atrocity crimes. The ICC emerged from decades of painstaking work by the global human rights and rule of law communities to ensure justice for survivors and victims of war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity. Though the US is not party to the Rome Statute, your administration's engagement with the Court has served as a reminder of how all countries can help advance the work of the ICC and international justice. Over the past year, your administration has continued to support the work of the ICC through participating constructively in its governing body and making pledges relating to the Court's work.

Most recently, the US showed strong leadership in the United Nations Security Council by acting unanimously with the international community to adopt Resolution 1970, thereby referring the situation in Libya to the ICC. On June 27, the judges of the ICC issued arrest warrants for Col. Muammar Gaddafi and others accused of orchestrating widespread and systematic attacks against civilians in Libya.

I urge the United States government to work with the international community to swiftly fulfill the mandate given to the ICC by Security Council Resolution 1970. Please undertake all possible efforts to bring about the arrest those wanted by the ICC, including Col. Gaddafi.

Thank you for renewing US leadership in the fight against impunity for atrocity crimes. I appreciated the continued efforts of your administration to further advance the US relationship with the ICC.
