Ask Oral Roberts University to Denounce Uganda's "Kill the Gays" Bill

The Issue

Oral Roberts University is a prominent religious school in Oklahoma, founded by the late evangelist Oral Roberts. Part of the school's infrastructure includes a "Board of Reference," which is a body that the university uses to help bolster the school's reputation. People on the board of directors are considered by the university to be highly influential, respectable, and among the world's best and brightest.

So why does the Board of Reference for Oral Roberts University include a pastor in Uganda, Martin Ssempa, who wants to see all gay people killed or imprisoned for life? Indeed, here is a person who advocates violence against LGBT people in Uganda, and who shows pornographic images to families and even children in order to stir outrage over homosexuality.

Is that really the type of person that Oral Roberts University wants on such an influential university board?

Ssempa's work to demonize LGBT people has been condemned by many religious organizations. Pastor Rick Warren has distanced himself from Ssempa for the work Ssempa is doing to harm LGBT people. The Philadelphia Bible Society, which had previously awarded Ssempa an honorary degree, also blasted his anti-gay work as dangerous and harmful.

It's time Oral Roberts University followed suit. Send the school a message letting them know that Martin Ssempa should not be celebrated by the school or put in a position of prominence. Here is a man with dangerous anti-gay viewpoints, who if he had his way, would see to it that all gay people in Uganda were killed or imprisoned for life. Can that really be a position that Oral Roberts University wants to endorse?
