Approve Native American Trust Fund

Approve Native American Trust Fund
The Issue
Native Americans' property rights have been controlled by the US government since 1887. Though all the income from the land was promised to the Indians, money owed them has been pilfered, skimmed, redirected, or thrown in with general government funds. In 1996, banker Elouise Cobell filed a class action lawsuit charging government mismanagement of more than $100 billion in oil, timber, grazing and other royalties on land owned by some 500,000 individual Indian beneficiaries. Finally, in December 2009, a settlement was offered in this 13 year old case, which the Native American plaintiffs accepted despite their disappointment at the terms. Congress must approve and fund the Cobell settlement so that this injustice can be laid to rest, now.
