Alemnew Mekonnen insulted and degraded the Amhara people. UDJ demands that he must be removed from his government and party offices and brought to justice.

The Issue

Rulers who insulted and degraded the Amhara people must be brought to justice!!

The so called leaders of the Amhara people insulted and degrade the people they claim to represent. In so doing, they degrade themselves. What is incomprehensible is that they do not seem to be aware of this compounded self-degradation.

Ato Alemnew Mekonnen is the Vice President of the Amhara Regional Government and the Head of the Office of the ruling Amhara National Democratic Movement. Recently, Ato Alemnew has been widely quoted by the Ethiopian Satellite Television (ESAT) and several other social media as having said the following, in Amharic, about the Amhara people: “ሰንፋጭየሆነትምክህተኝነትየተጠናወተው፣ትምከህተኝነቱንያልተወ፣በባዶእግሩእየሄደመርዝንግግርየሚናገርወዘተ ….የትምህርትልጋጉንማራግፍአለበት፡፡”

The equivalent meaning in English is: “Stinker and infected with arrogance; not having abandoned their arrogance, they go about barefooted and spread poison etc. …They have to get rid of their drool of arrogance.”

Unity for Democracy and Justice (UDJ) finds an Amhara leader hurling such an insult at the Amhara people utterly incomprehensible. The Amhara people, like all of the other people of Ethiopia, are a proud people that have paid great sacrifices to write the proud history of our country that we all value greatly today.

UDJ believes that the perpetrator of this shameful hate speech must be called to account. We demand that he must be removed from his government and party offices and brought to justice. If this measure is not taken, it will be assumed that both the ruling regional party (ANDM) and the Amhara Regional Government condone the cruel insult of the Amhara people and UDJ will be forced to take the matter to court and to the people.

UDJ is planning to conduct a rally in Bahir Dar to condemn the anti-people attitude being brazenly reflected among the leadership of the Amhara people and calls upon the people of the region to stand on its side in condemning the regional leaders who insult and degrade the very people they claim to represent.
