Alternate Form of Government

The Issue

Throughout human history, it has consistently been shown that when groups want to propose and advocate for a new form of government, it is usually done so through the use of violence and fear.  This alternative strives to transcend the uncivilized nature of human beings to attempt to create the future that we would want to live in.

Major Changes:

No more elected representation.  Due to the improvement of communication technology, the role of elected representatives has become obsolete.  There are plenty of people who care very strongly on every side of every issue, that are not politicians, but if given the opportunity to vote would do so.  The original role of politicians was to cast votes in place of citizens who wanted to vote, but could not due to travel or financial contraints.  The internet has made it possible for us to vote from the comfort of our own homes, at our convenience.  Instead, we are dealing with an extremely small proportion (approx. 1 representative for every 500,000 people on the federal level) of society who can not possibly accurately represent the views of every one of their constituents.  It is time, since we are capable, to allow those who want to vote to do so for themselves.  This eliminates salaries for politicians, corporate purchasing of representatives, and inaccurate representation.

The abolition of fractional-reserve banking.  Currently, as money is created there is an unequal amount of debt also created, making it impossible for all debt to ever be paid back fully.  Meaning if $1b is created, then $1b in debt is also created plus the interest accrued over the length of the loan, which results in $1b not being able to pay back the loan of $1b since there was more debt than money created.  This results in an ever increasing public debt, as well as inevitable bankruptcies and foreclosures.  In the proposed alternative government, the power to create money is taken away from banks, in the form of fractional-reserve banking, and given to the people.  This takes the benefit (profit) away from banks and allows the public to enjoy it through being able to pay for public services without having to go into debt or require the people to pay taxes.  The process would go something like this:  A need for a public service arises, say road repair or law enforcement, which the public decides is necessary to the benefit of the community, and offers a public contract.  The contract is then bid on by private contractors, which are then voted on by the public.  Once the voting ends, the winning contractor would provide the service and be paid.  The public wins because the service was provided, while the contractor wins because he was paid for his work.  This works differently than the current system in two important aspects.  First, it makes it possible for companies to benefit the public, at the scrutiny of the public, without forcing the public to tax each other or going into debt.  Second, it eliminates inflation as we know it, since money is no longer created at a net negative, meaning it's possible for people to make money without having to borrow it in the first place.  This unlimited supply of funding also makes it possible to expand the number of jobs at competitive pay rates, ultimately greatly reducing unemployment.

Revamping of laws.  Currently, the individual is subject to the authority of the government.  However, a more rational government would recognize that no one knows how to live their life better than the individual living it.  Therefore, it should be the individual who is sovereign, subject to their own personal laws, except when the individual's actions infringe on another's sovereignty.  In such cases, the individuals involved would utilize the services of fact finding and retribution company, for example, "Trial by Jury, Inc."  The company would determine if there was in fact infringement, while deciding on proper punishment.  The goal of the company would be to ensure infringement doesn't happen again, losses are repaid, and punishment terms if losses can't be repaid.

This proposed system requires a mentality of creating the future we want, as opposed to the current reactionary mentality employed.  For example, instituting a behavioral self control course in elementary education would help teach kids how to nonviolently deal with conflicts, instead of teaching them nothing of the sort and then punishing them when they act out violently, especially when that is America's way of dealing with international conflicts.  Since we would be teaching the future leaders of the world how to handle conflicts rationally, they should be able to find innovative ways of applying those techniques internationally, eliminating war as a strategy, and finding beneficial solutions to all parties involved.

This system also makes it possible for people to benefit off of helping other people while enabling an ever expanding economy.  The incentive that is created would encourage people to find the most beneficial solutions to public problems.  For example, if road crews are putting in bids for a contract, and one company decides to offer a comprehensive road improvement plan that implements solar panel technology into the roadways, ultimately leading to the community drastically reducing personal energy costs, the public may be willing to pay more for that company's strategy instead of saving money on a contractor that will only put bandages on the worst parts of the roads.  It also makes it possible for communities to offer contracts designed to help those affected by natural disasters, by paying people who would be willing to travel on location and help with the rebuilding efforts.

The bottom line is that our current system, although working, is working poorly.  The will of the people has been diminished as our votes become worth less and less while wealthy entities can buy votes beneficial to themselves.  The solutions to end crime only expand prison population while denying people the opportunity to live freely.  The worst thing our current government does to us as people, is giving us incentive to act apathetically towards our fellow human beings, in the form of war, self-righteousness, taxation, and poorly designed economic systems.  It is time we create a future we want our children to live in since they will be the ones dealing with the problems we create.  One step in the right direction can amount to a snow ball rolling down a mountain, until the avalanche of justice, freedom and opportunity is truly given to all, regardless of sex, ethnicity, religion, or nationality.
