According to a January 2005 study in the Journal of Pediatrics, the average 4- to 5-year-old consumes 17 teaspoons of added sugar a day, which amounts to approximately 64.6 pounds of added sugar a year. The majority of a child's added sugar intake comes from products with added sugar, such as that found in Stonyfield Farms' YoBaby Yogurt 6-packs.

A single container of yogurt has 13 grams of sugar, the drinkable yogurts have a staggering 24 grams. That's 3 teaspoons of sugar in each 4-ounce cup, and 6 teaspoons of sugar in the drinkable version! Would you spoon 6 spoonfuls of sugar in your baby's mouth? So why does Stonyfield think we want this in our baby's yogurt?

This petition is to ask Stonyfield to make some changes. As a progressive, mission-driven company, it should be a no-brainer for Stonyfield to:

1. cut the amount of sugar in both products in half

2. create a fruit-sweetened only variety with NO refined sugar at all!

Thank you so much for signing!

As a parent, I want you to cut the sugar in Stonyfield's YoBaby products

Dear Mr. Hirshberg,

It is not every day that a company as special as Stonyfield Farm comes into being. As a parent concerned with both my child's health and the planet's, I applaud everything that Stonyfield Farm is doing to create a more sustainable future for us all. Your dedication to reducing your company's carbon footprint overall is impressive, and your research into reducing cattle's methane emissions while working to help small dairy farmers represents the best practices of a sustainable food industry still in its infancy.

But today, I want to tackle another subject: sugar. According to a January 2005 study in the Journal of Pediatrics, the average 4- to 5-year-old consumes 17 teaspoons of added sugar a day, which amounts to approximately 64.6 pounds of added sugar a year. The majority of a child's added sugar intake comes from products with added sugar, such as is found in Stonyfield Farms' YoBaby Yogurt 6-packs and drinkables.

As a parent, I try to limit sugar in my child's diet. It is an uphill battle, as sugar is abundant in so many otherwise healthy products - including yours. I was absolutely shocked to find out that there were 24 grams - that's 6 teaspoons! - of sugar in your drinkable yogurt product aimed at babies and toddlers. There is no way I would spoon 6 heaps of sugar in my child's mouth, and I can't in good conscience feed your yogurt to my children.

I believe that Stonyfield Farm, as a progressive company I want to support, can and should lead the charge by:

1. removing all refined sugar from its products and,
2. cutting the amount of sugar (from fruit) in their products by half of its current grams per serving.

These two changes would make your products a truly healthy, sustainable food choice.

Until then, I plan to buy plain organic yogurt and add my own fruit. I would love the convenience of Stonyfield's products, but just can't justify the cost to my child's health.

Considering the massive health crisis facing our children today, eliminating refined sugar from your products is only socially responsible thing to do.

Please join us in leading the way to a healthier future for our kids.

Thank you,
