Age Discrimination at Work
Age Discrimination at Work
The Issue
Tell the president of the United States, Congress, and the house to pass a bill for more vigorous enforcement of the age discrimination act particularly. With the actual figures of unemployment being near 10% country wide that the one's we see everyday. This is because they are not counting the millions that have dropped off of unemployment benefits and still need to work and are without work.
This group of 99 er's , contains a vast majority of people 50 years old and above. Employers in the United States at all levels , including GE discriminate against workers due to age. I don't care if the head of Obama's jobs committe is a GE employee or not. I've actually been to a face to face interview with GE , in a male dominated environment. They did not take me seriously at all even though I have great job background and credentials and that was I know due to being over 50 years old.
99er's are quite often 50 or above. Many, many of them with degrees, years of job experience and excellent credentials. Yet in this youth favoring society we have nurtured in the United States these people are treated with distain when they apply for jobs. Or worse they are actually mocked because they are out looking for work. The work world changes constantly, jobs are constantly in flux, and coming and going. Thirty years ago people went to careers or jobs and often stayed there in that one field all thier lives. That is not the way employment is if it exists at all. So older workers with good skills are also in that work pool and effected by the same changes that happen to thier younger counter parts. However, middle aged workers are also smart enough to know the signs when they are being discriminated against.
Within a 5 day period of time in interviews while being interview by two people both younger than me here at two comments I recieved in interviews. From a younger man " well I really wasn't to willing to put training into a person that would retire soon". And from a only slightly younger woman " well I'm the oldest one who works here right now ". Comments of this type come out at middle aged workers in interviews in as claring messages that these people are biased to wards you due to your age. And that also you probably don't have lions chance in hell of getting a job here as we like people who are younger working here.
There is a law against age discrimination as we all know on the books. It doesn't work because employers discriminate anyway. This is the MOST prevalent type of discrimination in the United States today and our president and our congress and house need to toughen the laws related to this specific type of discrimination and do it now.
Middle aged people who are 99er's, who need to work are losing thier homes, can't feed themselves, can't pay for fuel to heat thier homes, etc , etc in record numbers.
What is our govrnment going to do for us the middle aged to make this right, morally right and make sure people have a right to work according the the guidelines you already have on the books.
Where are our human rights ???????????????
