Australia can realistically aim to cut its emissions beyond its national target of 5% if native forest protection is added its national effort to combat change. At the same time, we can ensure a future for threatened wildlife, protect waterways and stop soil erosion.

Protect native forests, the cheap, quick & safe solution to climate change.

Greetings,

I just signed the following petition addressed to: The Australian Government.

Protect native forests, the cheap, quick & safe solution to climate change.

Australia can realistically aim to cut its emissions beyond its national target of 5% if native forest protection is added its policies to combat change. At the same time, we can ensure a future for threatened wildlife, protect waterways and stop soil erosion.
In international negotiations Australia should:
1. Call for the end of logging of all native forests and sourcing timber from plantations.
2. ensure that no country is able to avoid counting biofuels or biomass burning in their national accounts and that emissions associated with burning forests or forest waste are fully accounted for at source;
3. that if "Harvested Wood Products" are to be accounted for that export woodchips from developed countries are treated as an immediate emission in the exporting country;
4. That all exported wood and paper products from developing countries to developed countries are treated as an emission in the importing country;
5. that if wood is exported from a developed country for
biomass burning that it is counted as an immediate emission in the exporting country;
6. that if wood is exported for biomass burning from a
developing country to a developed country associated emissions are accounted for in the developed country;
7. that forest management reference levels exclude proposals to convert forests from wood production to biomass production; and
8. That the reference level for Harvested Wood Products fully account for wood and paper already in the waste stream and not inflate the ration of solid wood to waste.
