In these challenging economic times, Louisianians cannot afford to not consider all of the options to find the most fiscally responsible way that will return health-care and jobs to the region FASTER.

With the release of two studies confirming that the proposed plan for the University Medical Center (UMC) in New Orleans is not feasible, the UMC Board has been asked to produce a business plan and consider all options for the best and most affordable plan for the new UMC Academic Medical Center. We hope that the UMC Board will truly pursue ALL OPTIONS - including asking it's financial analysts Verite and Kaufman-Hall - to study the use of the existing Charity Hospital building as one of those options.

Add Charity Hospital to the Verite and Kaufman-Hall Study

I am contacting you to ask that you use tax payer money responsibly.

Please urge the University Medical Center Management Corporation Board to include the existing Charity Hospital structure in the new Verite and Kaufman-Hall feasibility study to determine the least expensive and most sustainable plan for UMC's new downtown hospital.

To not consider reusing the existing Charity Hospital building is unacceptable. The UMC Board were tasked with commissioning a new study that considers ALL OPTIONS. The Reverend Avery C. Alexander Hospital is one option, and would not cost tax-payers much to incorporate into the mix for the following reason:

The Foundation for Historical Louisiana was charged by the State Legislature to assess the feasibility of reusing the existing Charity Hospital building. The Foundation raised $600,000 dollars and hired the world class architectural firm RMJM Hillier and Associates -- specialists in building health care facilities around the world. RMJM Hillier determined that a modern, state-of-the-art hospital could be built in the existing shell of Charity and meet all the programmatic requirements of the new UMC Academic Medical Center for a fraction of the cost of the proposed new hospital, and could be finished years sooner.

It would be irresponsible for the State and the UMC Board not to take advantage of the only professional study of an already prepared alternative. Again, the UMC Board were tasked to consider ALL OPTIONS. I believe reusing the Reverend Avery C. Alexander Hospital would be a fiscally responsible and sustainable plan.

I ask that my voice be heard. I want to see the existing Charity Hospital Building included in the new Verite and Kaufman-Hall "all options" study.
