Act Now: Tar Sand Coming to Wisconsin
The Issue
Did you know that a plan is currently in the works to transport 1.2 million gallons of crude and tar sands oil – more than the proposed Keystone XL pipeline – right through the middle of Wisconsin?
If you didn’t know, you aren’t alone. The Enbridge Energy Company and Governor Walker’s Department of Natural Resources aren’t exactly shouting this latest environmental threat from the rooftops. But we are. And we need you to help.
Enbridge, the oil company planning the expansion, has a long and appalling record of environmental violations. In 2010, an Enbridge pipeline ruptured in Michigan, sending 834,000 barrels of oil down the Kalamazoo River. It still hasn’t been fully cleaned up. Here in Wisconsin, Enbridge is guilty of more than 100 environmental violation in 14 counties.
Now they want to add nasty tar sands to the mix. Tar sands oil is incredibly dense, so if there is a spill in a waterway, it does not float, making cleanup much more difficult. Not to mention that tar sands oil results in much higher climate change-inducing carbon emissions than conventional oil.
It’s a lose, lose, lose proposition.
Please add your signature now and urge the DNR to slow the process down and conduct a full environmental impact analysis.
