Please investigate why Ace the dog was killed by Detroit Animal Control (DAC) despite a judge issuing a stay of execution for the dog. Thousands of caring citizens and several reputable rescue groups had fought tirelessly to save Ace and give him a little peace and comfort. Ace had visible signs of abuse, was emaciated and frightened when he sought refuge in an Ace Hardware store. The owner unknowingly called Animal Control, thinking they would help the frightened dog. Instead DAC killed him. It was the wrong thing to do morally and ethically for Ace and for the larger community. There is a direct correlation between how we treat animals and how we treat our fellow human beings - and there is no excuse for this cruelty. The incident needs to be investigated, individuals who may have ignored the order need to be held accountable and laws that are antiquated need to be updated to prevent this kind of tragedy from repeating itself.

Specifically, all state and local government funded animal welfare agencies that deal with animals should be required to work with local animal rescue groups to place as many animals as possible that they are willing and able to take and assume care and liability for. Breed specific legislation should be ended and the use of gas chambers as a means of euthanasia should be banned in these facilities.

Thank you,
