Hello Supporters,
Please come to the:
Rally to Save the Vancouver Aquatic Centre
April 12 at 11 am
City Hall (Cambie and 12th)
As you know, on March 31st the Park Board voted to renew the VAC with a 25 metre pool despite extensive public outcry and in opposition to the will of the voters in the 2022 plebiscite, which clearly stated a 50m pool.
A 25m pool will reduce capacity and access to aquatic services across the city and affect every aquatic user in Vancouver as people, programs and clubs compete for pool space that has only decreased over the past 15 years while the population has boomed by nearly 20%.
Swimming is a lifelong activity for all ages. Having access to 50m swimming is crucial for kids and adults alike as part of recreational exercise and competitive training. Less than 50% of Vancouver's kids can swim, an embarrassment given Vancouver is surrounded by water and beautiful beaches. Closing the VAC for 3-4 years and then reducing the VAC to a 25m pool will reduce capacity for offering swim lessons and add to the growing waitlist both in the short and long term.
Seniors and those with mobility issues who require the extra space a 50m pool offers will be hard hit too. For some people, swimming is the only activity they can do because it's not weight bearing.
It is unconscionable that the Park Board plans to replace VAC on-site, leaving Vancouver without one of its busiest pools for up to four years. This plan will cause irreparable harm to the children, adults, and seniors of our City.
Thank you to all of you who turned out for the Rally for a 50m Pool last Saturday. Please attend the rally on April 12, come rain or shine. With the Council Meeting to approve the extra funds the Park Board needs to build even the 25m pool looming, this may be our last chance to show the extent of our opposition to the 25m pool plan.
Thank you.
