The Issue

A longstanding part of the natural heritage of Stoney Creek and Hamilton, the Devil's Punchbowl has been a local landmark since time immemorial and has punctuated Stoney Creek’s colourful history as one of Canada’s early townships. Set in the dead-centre of the Niagara Escarpment, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, at 37m high and 10m wide, 'the Punchbowl' constitutes the third largest waterfall in the City of Hamilton and is widely hailed as one of the Niagara Escarpment's most unforgettable sights. With its own special charms during both the day and night, the Punchbowl area is also host to a 10m high illuminated cross, and a platform with one of the best views of the city and region.

Although the basin continues to be a popular destination among hikers and nature enthusiasts from the Bruce Trail, the pathways which extend to the basin are in not in a condition fit for wider public use. A popular place for all sorts of recreation, 'the Punchbowl' continues to attract visitors and locals alike, but the area surrounding it is largely inaccessible for anyone but the able-bodied. While the Punchbowl should be a great place for families, young children, the elderly, the casually athletic, picnic goers and persons with disabilities, this requires a substantial upgrade of the pathways. By investing in new infrastructure for the Punchbowl, this natural endowment can become a wonderful attraction for everyone.

By signing this petition, you are telling decision-makers that the Punchbowl’s beauty is valued and that everyone should be able to fully enjoy it. You are telling decision-makers that you value the city’s natural endowments and its heritage. And finally, you are telling decision-makers to invest in Hamilton’s public spaces and image.
