Review and Resolve the Traffic Chaos/Congestion caused by the various "Improvements" made to our City Centre and surrounding area roads.
The Issue
This is a petition to ask the Mayor and Leicester to review their current stratergy, not rip it up and start again. This is not cyclist vs motorist, I must stress this as people are twisting it this way as it sells papers.
We clearly need a transport system large and robust enough to support all methods of transport to suit everyones needs. Take Amsterdam as an example, they have cycle provisions alongside trams, train, bus & still have plenty of space for cars. Even Nottingham has a better bus service and a Tram.
Currently users of motor vehicles have expressed concerns at not being able to cycle or the buses not being frequent or cheap enough and getting stuck in traffic along with the cars.
Major concern has been raised for the Emergencies Services also, response times must be increasing putting lives at risk.
Cyclists are also at risk to congestion, they will and do have to use the road at several points along their journey. Cyclist groups do not help by stressing how dangerous cycling is, when the CTC national cycling charity labels Cycling as low risk. How will we get enough on bikes if you make out it's too dangerous?
I cycle when I can and it suits, people need to understand cycling isn't for everyone and that other current services are not up to scratch which is why most use their own vehicle.
Pollution is surely increasing at the moment with the same volume of cars but travelling slower.
We appriciate there is a lot of work going on, but we don't see the benefit now only a worsening situation with no end in sight.
