Safe and Affordable Energy for Philadelphia

The Issue

We, the undersigned residents of Philadelphia, are concerned about access to safe, affordable, fossil-free energy in our city. Too many Philadelphians face high energy bills and utility shut-offs. More heat waves and violent storms in our region drive up our energy costs and our home repair needs. We are especially concerned about the costs of gas—on our wallets, our health, and our safety. We need energy alternatives that don’t break the bank, pollute our indoor air, blow up homes, and heat our planet. Everybody deserves a home that is affordably heated and cooled. We need an energy future that is affordable, safe, reliable, and sustainable. And we all deserve a livable planet where we can thrive. Right now we don’t have that and our City is not making the progress we want to see. We need the City to treat this like the energy affordability, health, and environmental emergency that it is - and to start with PGW, our city-owned utility.

We call on Mayor Parker and the City Council to direct PGW to:

  • Protect gas customers from paying higher bills for the expansion of dirty, dangerous gas.
  • Carry out transparent, community-driven planning that centers low-income communities, communities of color, and current energy workers.
  • Implement a long-term plan to replace gas with affordable, clean, fossil-free energy by 2050 - with clear interim goals.
  • Ensure PGW spending matches the long-term plan.
