Los Glaciares National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site. We request that it be included in the “in Danger” list.The construction of the Kirchner dam will affect the glaciers of the Park.

The Perito Moreno Glacier and the whole of “Los Glaciares National Park” (Argentina) is considered, by UNESCO, a World Heritage site. The Argentine government will start the construction of a dam which will change the water level of the lake where this and many other glaciers calve having a negative effect on them. We request that this place be now included in the “World Heritage in Danger” list.
I am Gerardo Bartolomé, Civil Engineer and writer of Patagonia. I know how hydrelectic power dams work and, because of my books, I've come to know the place very well. I have checked my fears with glacier specialists and they have agreed with me in that many of the ice masses of the Park are in real danger because of this project.
Without an Environmental Impact Assessment, the Argentine Government plans to construct the Nestor Kirchner dam in the Santa Cruz River Valley which will affect the water level of Lake Argentino in Los Glaciares National Park, where many incredible glaciers calve. The operation of the Hydroelectric Power Station will produce a negative effect on the glaciers called “calving” as has been checked with several glaciologists.
It is crucial that UNESCO contacts the Argentine Government so as to get informed, get involved and provide third party opinion regarding the construction of the dam and its effects on the glaciers of the “Los Glaciares National Park” which include the world famous Perito Moreno glacier.The Argentine Government has decided to start the construction regardless of the result of any kind of studies over the glaciers which, by the way, might never be started.
Hundreds of thousands of tourists from the entire world come every year to see this natural beauty, you could be one of them. I feel that it is our duty to protect the environment and specially the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
By signing this petition the UNESCO World Heritage Committee will receive a request that this site be included in the "In Danger" list and will put pressure on the Argentine Governement so as to protect what belongs to all of us.
