When I first attended initiation as a freshman to the University of North Texas, President Neal Smatresk voice his great pride in the university, saying: “The University of North Texas is full of staff who genuinely care for their students and will go the extra mile to ensure their success.” As of July 9, 2020, this statement is completely and erroneously incorrect. President Smatresk and the University of North Texas have yet to indicate a decrease in tuition for the fall 2020 semester. With classes starting in a month, it is imperative that the administration addresses this issue at hand as students and families are starting to question the cost of high tuition and the benefits received from online teaching due to the pandemic. Many students will have their entire course load online or remote, rather than in-person, and it is unlikely the majority of students will have a full course-load face-to-face semester. UNT fully expects students to risk infection to live on-campus and for the rest to pay full-price tuition and fees for services that they will not have access to. The students of UNT demand better than zero accountability from President Smatresk and the Board of UNT.
