The Homecoming dance at Mount Anthony Union High School in Bennington, VT this year has been cancelled due to "dancing behavior [crossing] the line of what we can condone as appropriate behavior at a school." (inquisitr.com) as Principal Sue Maguire stated. 

There's no question that inappropriate behavior occurs at homecoming and dances similar to homecoming. However, the reactive actions being taken by the school administration are unfair to those who act appropriately. They also avoid those who don't act appropriately, failing to address them whatsoever.

The environment where these inappropriate actions occur is an environment under the control of the school administration, and not so much one created by the students or any minimally influential celebrity, but one that is provided for the students by the school administration. Therefore, we believe the administration has control over the actions taken by the students at these events, and can take steps to remedy these actions, rather than cut out the entire event. Some of these staps may include:

- An alternative playlist for school dance DJs that doesn't promote inappropriate actions. 

- A greater amount of administration, staff, or volunteer chaperones, should controlling students prove to be a problem. 

- A larger area to hold the dance in, as to keep students from getting crowded or overheated. Having such a small dance area promotes what's trying to be prevented. 

We believe that, in addition to this list, the MAUHS staff can develop suggestions as to better regulate the dance, and refrain from removing it completely. 

It's time to stop punishing all students because a few fail to abide by the rules. Sue Maguire, please keep your promise "...to keep students safe and teach them how to interact with others appropriately." (inquisitr.com) and address the problem in the best interests of MAUHS students by reinstating this year's homecoming.
