The Issue

A 19 year old girl, Lola Tyrrell has attempted suicide many times in the last week. The circumstances of this is from her ex-boyfriend, abusing her on several occasions and destroying her mental health by forms of bullying. is 54 years old and is a sexual predator and abuser.

We would like as many people as possible to sign this petition to get him removed off social media, have a jail sentence instead of only receiving community service and a “telling off”. He has confessed to police what he has done to Lola. We want to raise awareness and speak up for victims who have experienced or who are experiencing abuse currently. We think it’s important that ALL first time offenders of domestic abuse should receive jail-time.

The Decision Makers

Sadiq Khan
Mayor of London
Responded
“Dear Petitioner, Thank you for the petition submitted on the change.org website about removing domestic violence perpetrators from social media and ensuring first-time domestic abuse offenders receive jail time. The experiences outlined in the petition are clearly upsetting, as is the impact that I am sure this has had on the wider family. Whilst London is one of the world’s safest cities for women and girls, the Mayor has publicly stated that it is still not good enough for the many women and girls who experience abuse and violence in our city each year. The Mayor has made specific commitments to tackle these issues and the Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, Sophie Linden, has ensured that this is a primary focus for the Mayor’s Office for Policing And Crime (MOPAC) since coming to office. In March this year, MOPAC published the Violence Against Women and Girls Strategy. This document can be found on the City Hall website through the following link: www.london.gov.uk/sites/default/files/vawg_strategy_2018-21.pdf The Mayor has no powers to set or change legislation. This is the responsibility of central government, but please be assured that the Mayor is working with partners to achieve real change around domestic abuse. The Mayor has made strong representation to the government to go further on tackling perpetrators of domestic abuse through the response provided to the Home Secretary regarding the Domestic Abuse Bill consultation. If you have experienced the issues raised in the petition and would like to seek support, you may wish to get in touch with Women’s Aid. They are a national women’s agency that will be able to provide advice. Their free 24-hour confidential helpline can be reached on 0808 2000 247.
