Main Roads: Improve safety at Hampton Rd crossing

The issue

We are drawing the attention of Main Roads WA to Hampton Road in South Fremantle, and the inability of residents, in particular children, to cross safely, and to ask that action be taken to upgrade the crossing.

The intersection of Hampton Road and Scott Street has proved that it is in need of change, as there have been two accidents involving children in the last year alone.

The issue arises when cars pause trying to turn right into Scott Street, or pause to allow pedestrians to cross Hampton Road, and drivers behind become frustrated and veer into the bus lane to overtake. We understand that overtaking in a bus lane is legal over a short distance; however this poses an unacceptable risk to pedestrians.

When children are getting hit by cars in the same location, something needs to change.

This particular crossing point is incredibly important as it links the local primary school with a shopping centre, and it is the most efficient way of crossing in the area. The nearest traffic light crossing is slightly North along Hampton Road, where it intersects with Lefroy Road. We understand that crossing guards are provided during the regular school zone hours; however this crossing is utilised by both adults and children often when there are no guards present.

The proximity to a primary school as well as a shopping centre is grounds for an upgrade to this crossing to be made a priority. We cannot wait for more accidents in order for something to be done – one child being struck by a vehicle is one too many.

We are calling on Main Roads to take action. The fact of the matter is that there are a number of solutions that can be applied, from traffic lights to dividing barriers, but we believe that Main Roads should consider this an immediate priority and install the most appropriate safety infrastructure.
