NY Yankees: Do not offer a contract to Joe Girardi for 2018
The Issue
As Yankee fans, we, the undersigned, request that you do not extend a contract to Joe Girardi for 2018. His multiple miscues and constant mismanagement have cost the team countless victories and most recently, torpedoed a magical 2017 season. His constant burnout of the bullpen, not trusting his starting pitching, and his inability to adjust his rigid strategies mid-game based on the situation show his lack of baseball intelligence. The mantra of "your bullpen is most effective when it is not in the game" is a concept that is too difficult to grasp for him.
The 2017 Yankees have underperformed according to their run differential, and that is the first and foremost indicator of a manager's ability to win close games. If the Yankees had played to their run differential, they would have won the AL East.
Last night, October 6th, was the final straw. With CC cruising along, he took him out at 77 pitches and brought in an overworked Chad Green. Then, with two outs, and two challenges, he refused to trust his catcher, who had the best view in the house. Replays showed that the ball was tipped and it would have resulted in a strikeout to end the inning. The result of his abject failure led to Lindor following up with a grandslam, and we eventually lost the game. He ended the game with that one challenge in his pocket, unused. That challenge could have, and mostly would have, led to a victory, and changed the history of this franchise. Then in the final inning, with a visibly tiring Betances, he allowed him to pitch, which led to Jackson getting on base. Everyone knew he would steal, the announcers included, as Betances has terrible difficulty holding on runners. The smart move would have been to bring in a reliever, such as Warren, or another pitcher, who could have kept the runner close. Girardi, once again, did nothing...and we lost. This is unacceptable.
Girardi lacks the mental capacity and baseball intelligence to adjust to in-game situations, and follows a binder of information without any imagination. Although this binder is a vital piece of the decision making process, he has to be able to adjust to the game in front of him. He is simply not smart enough to think for himself. His actions after the game were even more indicative of his arrogance and blatant inability to accept blame.
In 1995, Showalter refused to go to Rivera, and his lack of understanding led your father to determine he was unworthy of returning. He had another gaffe with the Orioles by not putting Britton. He is also incapable of changing. He was the last micro-managing manager we had, and we replaced him with Joe Torre, who understood his players and not just numbers. History speaks for itself.
This Yankee team needs it's Joe Torre. It is NOT Joe Girardi. He will go down in post-season history with one of the worst managerial decisions ever, and I believe it was the worst call ever, when you realize what he had to lose, which was nothing.
Mr. Steinbrenner, do us Yankee fans a favor, and the whole city a favor, and go in another direction when his contract is up.
Please.
