The Ford Panther platform has been very popular with taxi and police agencies for over 20 years, why would they get rid of them?

We all understand that sales were dropping in favor of newer, more fuel-efficient vehicles, and the fact that the Crown Victoria body didn't recieve any major changes since 1998, but why didn't Ford just continue it with a newer fuel efficient engine or other parts? Many people still drive Crown Victorias today - and many people would've loved to buy one brand new, but some times we don't realize how good things are until they're gone. I'm sure police agencies and taxi companies would also be in favor of bringing these bad boys back, not everyone loves the 'new' Taurus!
