In 2008, my wife, Denise Amber Lee, was kidnapped from our home and forced to leave our two small children. For several hours, her assailant held her hostage. She was able to reach 9-1-1 on her abductor's cell phone and speak to the dispatcher for more than six minutes, but she did not know where she was, and the wireless carrier could not provide an accurate Phase II location.

She was found two days later buried in a shallow grave.

I know 9-1-1 communicators feel horror and frustration every time they cannot locate a 9-1-1 caller because the call was disconnected or a caller is lost, unconscious, confused, or threatened. Those seconds can mean the difference between life and death.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is considering new location accuracy requirements for carriers to ensure all wireless callers can be quickly found, both indoors and outdoors, but some are trying to delay or defeat those new rules.

To pass those requirements, thousands of public safety professionals are urging the FCC to take action, and I hope you'll join us.
