Improve Resources Available To Students With Disabilities
Improve Resources Available To Students With Disabilities
The Issue
Goal:
To have 2,000 signatures in support of technology accessibility at Newark, New Jersey Essex County College
This is important because students with disabilities should have equal access to educational materials within any learning institution. At Essex County College it is not that way. There are eight computer labs in one building at their main campus. However, there is only one computer available to students with disabilities which has outdated software installed. Essex County college is expecting 200 new computer devices; how many of them will be accessible to a visually impaired or blind student? There are two disability counselors on campus but the only accommodation they provide is a notice letter to professors which allows the professor to be aware that a student with a disability will be taking his/her course.
Essex County College needs to train their staff monthly with components relative to technology accessibility, the ins and outs of etiquette in teaching a student with a disability, and there should be at least one computer in each lab with updated materials/software installed.
These demands will offer the institution a reputation that attending Essex County College as a student with a disability is not violating the Americans with Disability Act section 504 title 2.
If a student with a disability wants to learn that student should have the same priviledges as students without disabilities.
