Demand urgent safety measures for GBV in South Africa
The Issue
Over the past two months, eight women in Ekurhuleni—including mother and passionate runner Elizabeth "Tsontso" Moselakgomo—were sexually assaulted, killed, and left in open fields and roadside bushes.
Women in South Africa cannot jog, walk to public transport, or exist in public spaces without fearing for their lives. It is deeply unacceptable that every time women are targeted in public spaces, official responses advise women to "exercise caution," "avoid isolated areas," and "move in groups."
Stop policing the movements of women. Start holding violent predators accountable.
We are calling for an immediate end to empty rhetoric and reactive condolences. We demand concrete, measurable, and systemic action from South African leadership:
1. Immediate Transparency: Weekly, public progress updates from the multidisciplinary task teams investigating the Ekurhuleni murders and similar serial patterns nationwide.
2. Infrastructure for Safety: Immediate municipal safety audits in high-risk zones—fix unlit streetlights, clear overgrown brush, and deploy active, visible policing where women are most vulnerable.
3. SAPS Accountability: Zero tolerance for police officers who dismiss reports of missing women or domestic violence, alongside fully resourced Victim Support Units at every station.
4. Fast-Tracked Judicial Action: Elimination of forensic DNA processing backlogs, dedicated GBV courts, and stricter bail conditions for violent sexual offenders.
5. Full Resource Allocation: Full execution and funding for the National Strategic Plan on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (NSP-GBVF).
Women are not statistics. We deserve to live freely, safely, and without fear in our own country.
Sign this petition to demand that our government treats Gender-Based Violence with the national urgency it requires.
