Include more than 10 teams at the 2019 Cricket World Cup and beyond
The Issue
A World Cup should be an event that celebrates the many nations that play a sport. Cricket should be no different.
The ICC have decided that, from 2019, no more than 10 nations should compete in the 50 over Cricket World Cup. I believe that this decision is wrong.
My vision for future Cricket World Cups is one of expansion of the game, and inclusion of the nations who are striving to compete at the highest level.
Cricket appears to reject opportunities to expand the game. Its archaic "status" system does nothing to expand the game - instead perpetuating the cartel of "major" nations.
There are countless examples of nations outside the top 10 competing and giving a real boost to a World Cup. Every day during the 2015 World Cup we are seeing more great performances - all with newsworthy and often heart-warming stories attached. These performances are often far superior to those of "established" nations.
Dave Richardson has spoken of his desire for every game at the World Cup to be "competitive". He says "the World Cup itself, the premium event, without exception should be played between teams that are evenly matched and competitive." The presence of nations outside the top 10, in his view, doesn't deliver a competitive World Cup.
I write this as a fan of the game of cricket. I have worked at Cricinfo, and I have witnessed at first-hand the passion of cricket fans in countries beyond the 10 Test playing nations. I have played cricket in Ireland, watched cricket in the Netherlands, and have seen the amazing following that Nepal and Afghanistan generate on the internet.
I honestly feel that Dave Richardson is an intelligent, hard-working and honest administrator, trying to make a compromise between the needs of TV, the established cricketing countries and the events themselves. But I also feel that on this occasion, he couldn't be more wrong, and should reverse the decision to restrict the World Cup to the top 10 nations.
My motivation here is pure and simple. I want more people to enjoy the Cricket World Cup in the future, and more people around the world to enjoy the joy of cricket.
