Get Dan Snyder to sell Washington D.C.'s football team before it becomes black mark on FedEx.
The Issue
FedEx is the name on the stadium and the company's CEO, Fred Smith, sits on the board of Washington DC's NFL team. Dan Snyder is the owner, of course. He calls himself a life long 'skins fan, yet all he has done is turn his, mine and many others' favorite NFL team into a joke on and off the field.
In order to prevent this continued decline into farce, I'm asking for fans, and non fans alike, to request that FedEx CEO, Fred Smith, ask Dan Snyder sell his stake or step aside, for the betterment of the team he supposedly loves, its supporters (who do) and the political discourse of the nation.
First, the big red elephant in the room when discussing the team, and the source of other petitions -- its name -- which Dan Snyder has promised to NEVER (requesting all caps) change.
Whether you're a fan who is part of the 79% who support this stance or 21% who don't, what Snyder's intransigence has done is, divide what had traditionally been an united cross section of Washington DC, Virginia and Maryland into: dumb racists or non-fan PC wussies, depending on the news channel you watch. In other words, Snyder has placed 100% of the fans, players and coaches, into middle of the Culture War cross-hairs.
Having to answer questions on the latest protest is undoubtedly a distraction for the players and coaches, who need to focus on why the team keeps losing. Although, the reason isn't a secret, hence the petition to Fred Smith, CEO of FedEx and member of the team's board.
Unlike other petitions, this is not just about the name but these numbers:
- 37.5 – The winning percentage of the three head coaches (out of eight) who lasted more than 2 years. This is not an average, but the exact same percentage. The exception: Joe Gibbs (46.9% vs. 67.4% under the previous ownership). [source: wikipedia]
- 597.51 – The cost (US Dollars) for a family of four to attend a game at FedEx field. Fourth most expensive in the NFL & $50 higher than the nearby Baltimore Ravens, who have actually won 2 Super Bowls and been consistently in the playoff mix during Dan Snyder's tenure. [source: 2014 NFL Fan Cost Index by Team Marketing Report]
- 03/06/2014 – The expiration date of the $9 beer (with WORLD CUP logo) sold at the last home game on 25/09/2014 – three months and three weeks after Germany kicked a round ball into a goal. [source: Washington Post]
- 2003 – The first time Dan Snyder publicly stated: “I have learned from my mistakes.”
- 6 – The number of years Vinny Cerrato remained Vice President of Football Operations after that statement, overseeing four last place finishes.
- 52.2 – The winning percentage of former defensive coordinator, Marvin Lewis, after he left the team in 2003 to become the head coach of the historically bad, Cincinnati Bengals.
- 100M – The dollar amount of the contract handed out to notorious malcontent Albert Haynesworth in 2009, who then publicly fell out with his defensive coordinator and ended up suspended.
- 36M – The amount of the fine in 2012 for being one of only two teams to circumvent NFL rules on the salary cap, to undo the damage of over paying for players like Albert Haynesworth.
- 4 – The number of draft picks (three first round, one second) given up for Robert Griffin III the same year, despite now not having the funds to plug the many other holes.
- 6 – The number of months it took to put in new turf after FedEx Field “ate RGIII's knee.” [quote: Sports Illustrated] Not investing in the best surface to protect your main investment is not stupid, but borderline criminally negligent.
- 2 – The number of lawsuits Dan Snyder has filed. One against a paper who dared to critique him, despite claiming to have never read the offending article. The other suit, against an old lady who could no longer afford her season tickets [source: NY Times Magazine]
If any other employee had this track record he would've been fired. But Dan Snyder has no intention of doing that to himself. He will continue playing us, fans, for suckers, by charging top dollar to watch a dysfunctional product. Snyder has proven he can't help himself. As long as he is around, fans will not only have the indignity of supporting a constantly losing team, but one whose name and mascot brings a whole bunch of unnecessary baggage, for us and our number one sponsor, FedEx. If we are to be life long losers, at least make us lovable like the Buffalo Bills, especially as they have a better record than Washington's since Dan Snyder assumed ownership.
By signing this petition, we - the fans and the people - can ask Fred Smith, the man with the power to end his bumbling, stumbling reign of ineptitude. We can prove that those responsible for a f@&k situation can be held accountable, even if they are the owner. We can set the precedent for long suffering fans from other teams, such as our great rival the Cowboys. And best of all, we can make Washington D.C.'s football team a symbol of unity again in a historically dysfunctional town under the banner of FedEx.
