Humane Society of the U.S., Give Your $390 Mil in Investments to Local Shelters

Humane Society of the U.S., Give Your $390 Mil in Investments to Local Shelters
The Issue
The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is about to change its name to Humane World for Animals. This change is long overdue because HSUS is not directly affiliated with any local humane societies and does not operate a single pet shelter.
For decades, HSUS’s name has caused confusion. People thought they were giving to a parent organization for their local humane society when, in fact, there was no connection. HSUS’s heart-wrenching fundraising ads, which show sad shelter pets, have only made the confusion worse.
That’s why I hope you’ll join me in calling on HSUS to donate its massive investments to local humane societies when it changes names. According to its most recent tax filing, HSUS has over $390 million in assets, including over $100 million in offshore accounts. Giving that money away would show a good faith commitment to what its old name represented and what many donors wanted: to help shelter pets, not stuff bank accounts.
Furthermore, local humane societies are in desperate need of that money. Many are overcrowded and operating on shoestring budgets. Suffering animals are being turned away or, appallingly, euthanized because of a lack of resources.
$390 million could go a long way toward saving animal lives and giving pets the care they deserve. Please sign the petition.

How is the HSUS affiliated with my local humane society?
Local humane societies and SPCAs are independent entities and aren’t run or overseen by the HSUS (or any other national entity)...running local animal shelters is not why we were founded.
