Write Your Reps: No Permanent Presence in Iraq

Write Your Reps: No Permanent Presence in Iraq

The Issue

Last December, President Bush signed an agreement with the Iraqi Prime Minister that commits the U.S. to a "long term" relationship with Iraq and lays the groundwork for binding his successor to a permanent relationship with Iraq.

Bush is trying to commit U.S. troops to a long-term presence in Iraq without the approval of Congress or the American people.

Now Representative Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) has introduced a bill that will prohibit Bush from making this commitment without the approval of Congress.

A great New York Times editorial explains why Bush's effort is wrong and deceitful.

"Given what's at stake in Iraq...the negotiations on any new agreement must be fully transparent -- which they are not. The national debate must be vigorous and thoughtful, and then Congress must vote on whatever deal results."

We all need to urge our representatives to co-sponsor H.R. 4959 to stop Bush from extending the Iraq disaster for many more years.

The Bush Administration plans to bypass Congress when it signs an agreement with Iraq. President Bush's plan to unilaterally commit the U.S. to a permanent presence in Iraq is not only unwise, but also unconstitutional.

DeLauro's legislation says no way, no how. Her bill demands that any long term security arrangement with Iraq be embodied in a treaty requiring the approval of Congress.

Bush has already created a disaster in Iraq, he cannot be trusted to make any more decisions there.

We'll keep you updated on the status of the bill as it gains more co-sponsors. Thanks all you Changers!
