Stop trivializing ADHD by giving a platform to extremists' opinions

Stop trivializing ADHD by giving a platform to extremists' opinions

The Issue

We, the individuals diagnosed with ADHD, their family, friends, service providers and medical professionals, strenuously object to characterizations that depict patients, parents, and doctors as simply seeking "easy" answers. There are no easy answers or cures for ADHD. By publicizing such minority, inflammatory views of this disorder, an evidence-based, scientifically validated understanding of ADHD is undermined and the dignity of these individuals and their families is trivialized.

These are real children, adults, parents, and families suffering and succeeding every day as they try and manage this challenging neurobiological disease. The focus should be on these real people, not on rhetoric.

We encourage more research and the sharing of best practices -- be they pharmacological, behavioral, and community driven -- and the continued trivialization of this very real disorder only inhibits our ability as a community to do so.

It is these extremist views that seek an easy answer -- to simply blame the parents and walk away rather than face the possibility that they lack the training and skill to treat this complex neurobiological disorder. Stop giving them a platform while ignoring what the actual research shows. Stop giving a platform to these minority extremists. Stop trivializing ADHD.
