Tell The EPA: Global Warming Endangers Public Health

The Issue

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently released a proposed finding that the current and projected concentrations of the mix of six key greenhouse gases—carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), perfluorocarbons (PFCs), and sulfur hexafluoride (SF6)—in the atmosphere threaten the public health and welfare of current and future generations. The EPA now is requesting public comments on this endangerment finding.

In May, the EPA held public hearings on this issue in both Seattle, WA, and the Washington, DC, metro area. In Washington, I called on the agency to move forward quickly with regulations to control the emissions of greenhouse gases that are contributing to global warming and creating a serious public health threat. I encouraged the EPA “to act immediately regardless of what action the Congress takes.” PSR’s President, Evan Kanter, testified at the Seattle hearing and spoke at a rally held outside the hearing site. You can read his comments on the event in his guest post on PSR’s blog here.

PSR believes the EPA must move forward with regulations now as the evidence for global warming and the public health consequences demand immediate action. The direct health consequences from longer, more intense heat waves; worsening air quality and more ozone alert days; extreme weather events and illnesses attributable to pest and water-borne disease.

Please let the EPA know that you agree with their finding that global warming has dire effects on human health and urge them to act on this finding by regulating greenhouse gases under the authority of the Clean Air Act.

To inform your comments to the EPA, and for more information on the adverse health effects of global warming, please see our new fact sheets on this issue. You can find all of PSR’s coverage on the EPA’s endangerment finding on PSR’s website, http://www.psr.org/
