Pledge to end needless blindness before World Sight Day: Oct 13

Pledge to end needless blindness before World Sight Day: Oct 13

The Issue

About 284 million people are visually impaired worldwide: 39 million are blind and 245 million have low vision. About 90% of those 284 million live in developing countries.

There is hope. Eighty percent of visual impairment -- from causes like river blindness can be prevented, treated or cured.

River blindness is spread by a fly that breeds in fast-flowing rivers. It is a major cause of blindness in west and central Africa -- 300,000 people there are already irreversibly blind, with another 140 million people in Africa at risk of infection.

River blindness is preventable. This World Sight Day, October 13th , join Sightsavers as they continue the effort to eradicate preventable blindness.

World Sight Day is an annual day of awareness held on the second Thursday of October, to focus global attention on blindness and vision impairment.

Take the pledge today.
