Severe respiratory difficulties are inevitable for patients with ALS and providing self-sufficient breathing support can prolong and increase quality of life. Some insurance companies are currently denying these types of machines at the onset of breathing problems and instead are taking a reactive approach (versus proactive) to the progression of ALS.
