Steam engines have been around for centuries.  Recently some groups have used the new technologies and applied it to this old concept.  Cyclone Power is one such company that seems to be making great headway with a new approach to an old engine.

The following article appears to make a good case for going back to steam The Modern Steam Engine and the application potential for using the Schoell Cycle in the Automobile.  Personally I never did care for the Internal Combustion Engine, a design of planned obsolescence.

This engine sounds like it would be more adaptable to multiple fuel sources, so adaptable in fact that DARPA is using it as an engine for their EATR robot.
