UNC-CH athletic scandal requires independent investigation

The Issue

The citizens of the state of North Carolina are being poorly served by our government leaders.   There has been a scandal brewing at UNC-chapel hill for quite some time.   The NCAA is currently investigating multiple scandals involving employees of the state as well as student athletes who receive fully funded scholarships to our publicly funded university.   The fundamental right of our citizens to know how our tax-funded schools are operating is being blocked by the Board of Governors, board of Trustees and the administration at that university.   Furthermore, the local news outlets have had to resort to lawsuits in an attempt to obtain the records that include such mundane topics as parking violation citations issued to those student-athletes that are under NCAA investigation.

North Carolina State University was totally and completely scrutinized in the late 1980s for less-egregious issues.  At that time,  the Board of Governors and the school's Board of Trustees demanded or complied to  an independent investigation into the operations of that school's athletic department, particularly as it related to the basketball program.  Furthermore, the independent investigators brought in several SBI agents to scrutinize the program.

Given that course of action for another school within the UNC system, we must demand that UNC-CH open their doors to an independent investigation team that has historically operated outside the influence of the university system.  Obviously, UNC-CH has used its political and financial might to hire the necessary staff of lawyers and advisers in an attempt to conceal their past actions.   That action implies that they are not to be trusted to investigate themselves.
