Alfonso is 21 years old and was brought to the U.S. from Mexico by his mother when he was 9 years old. He and his family are indigenous and his first language is Mixteco. Alfonso learned English quickly as a child, despite the fact that it was his third language. When he was in middle school, he won an essay contest writing about his experience migrating to the U.S. with his family. As he got older, he participated in soccer and a school tutoring program called Latinos in Action. While attending school, he worked in the fields during the picking seasons and also took on a lot of responsibility in his family due to the fact that he spoke English and Spanish in addition to Mixteco. Alfonso graduated from Burlington-Edison High School in 2009. Alfonso dreamed of college, but could not afford tuition so he began doing agricultural work to contribute to the household and try to save money to go back to school. Alfonso stayed in touch with his teachers and went to them seeking guidance for ways to finance school.

Alfonso has suffered from alcoholism and was charged with Minor in possession of liquor, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct. Though a counselor who provided treatment indicates that he thinks that Alfonso will be able to overcome his alcoholism and be a contributing member of society, he is currently detained and facing removal from his family to a country he hasn't known since he was a child. He needs your support so that he can remain in the U.S. with his parents and siblings and pursue his dream of higher education.

Alfonso has tremendous talent and potential. Like many people Alfonso had attempted to dull and drown out his pain and frustration using alcohol. he is being treated and his counselor believes he can have a productive and positive future.
