STOP Asian Carp: We can't beat 'em, but we can eat 'em.
STOP Asian Carp: We can't beat 'em, but we can eat 'em.
The Issue
The evident solution is to harvest the billions of pounds of Asian Carp before they invade the Great Lakes and their tributaries in the USA and Canada and thereby do billions of dollars of damage to the fishing and tourist industries there. The Asian carp feed on micro-organisms in the top layers of rivers, and are unlike the common carp which are bottom feeders.
Asian Carp, notably the Big Head and the Silver (collectively called "Silverfin"), have devastated the native fish in most of the Mississippi River Basin National Waters. The Federal and State governments are shuffling around, looking at their feet, but hoping to extract million from the taxpayers in order to do more "studies" which will accomplish little or nothing.
One Illinois fish processor does 30 million pounds a year of carp obtained from skiff fishermen using gill nets which kill all of the fish, including highly stressed native fish. There is a new approach aborning, that of Carp Catchers Cooperative, which if funded will deploy three ships to harvest the Asian carp and immediately return to the rivers the native fish, alive and unharmed. See more at: Carp Catchers Cooperative: http://carpcatchersco-op.wetpaint.com .
If you agree with this approach, please sign the petition and send me an email about your thoughts on how to increase the use of Silverfin for your fish fryes . Thanks,
