Stop Carlos Slim's Monopolistic Practices
The Issue
Carlos Slim’s business acumen is no doubt impressive, but we want him and his companies to be fair players in Mexico’s telecommunications industry. With nearly 75% control of mobile phone and fixed telephone line services in Mexico, Slim’s companies have unjustly crowded out competition. Since Mexico privatized the telecommunications industry in the 1990s, Carlos Slim has built an empire that has taken advantage of Mexico’s weak judicial structure to economically exploit all Mexicans. By offering unreliable services at exorbitant costs, Carlos Slim has amassed his wealth of $69 billion on the backs of Mexicans.
We want the Government of Mexico to continue to hold Carlos Slim and his company, América Móvil, accountable for monopolistic practices that have profoundly exploited consumers . As Carlos Slim continues to expand to Latin America and into the United States, we want him and host governments to consider the $67 billion USD he has overcharged Mexican consumers and the $129 billion USD his exploitative practices have cost Mexico’s economy. More importantly, we want to see economic justice served.
In the past decade, drug violence and poor economic conditions have ravished Mexican families. In a time when they needed access to mobile phones, affordable landline phone services, and internet the most, Carlos Slim exploited consumers by offering terrible services at exceedingly high prices - some of the highest in Latin America. Whether to contact a daughter late at night to make sure she’s coming home safely or reach a relative who migrated north or grow a business using mobile banking - access to phones and internet have become critical - and often the difference between life and death in day to day life in Mexico.
