Please Save the "Jallikattu" Bulls from Slaughter
The Issue
Respected Amma, the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu,
As you already know, the Supreme Court of India outlawed the barbaric, unethical and illegal practice of jallikattu on the 7th of May 2014. Now, the owners of these bulls, who were raising them for purely commercial reasons, have decided to condemn them to the worst form of cruelty and torture, on their way to be cruelly butchered in Kerala.
It is our most earnest plea to you that you please save the jallikattu bulls that are now being traded in high volumes at the Shandy markets. These Bulls are being sold to traders from Kerala who overload the Cattle in huge numbers onto trucks, thus violating the Animal Transport Laws & Sections 428 &429 of the IPC, the Tamilnadu Cattle Preservation Act of 1958, as well as the Tamilnadu Motor Vehicles Act.
According to the PCA Act, not more than 6 cattle may be transported in a large and open truck, but the transporters generally carry anywhere from 30 to 40 cattle, suffering pangs of great agony and torment, in a Truck. These Bulls are abused & ill-treated by the transporters, who put raw chilly in their eyes, hot water in their ears, irritants in the anus, etc. Most of the time, when the trucks finally reach their destinations, one will find dead bulls and cows, the weakest of the group, who were trampled underfoot by the others in their quests to find space within the confines of those cruel death traps that we refer to as lorries.
It is at a time like this that we turn to you, the leader of our great State, to please step in and do all that you can to save the lives of these bulls and help in rehabilitating them. These poor bulls should not be made to endure suffering and torture in the owners’ quest for commercial profit.
As Mahathma Gandhi said,
“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”
We plead with you to allow us, as proud Tamilians, to hold our heads up high. We do not want to cause these bulls any suffering. That was the idea behind the ban on jalikattu, and we should ensure that we uphold the spirit of that judgment. These bulls have earned the right to live out their lives in peace and tranquility, without being forced into Jallikattu, but without being brutally handled and cruelly slaughtered as well, and only you can give them both.
Please save their lives ma’am, and we will always hold ourselves eternally grateful to you for your mercy and compassion.
