Extend Bus Service Till Midnight In Bangalore

The Issue

We, Bangaloreans, are in dire need of a proper public transport system in the city. While Bangalore city shuts at 11:30 p.m. the bus service at present shuts at 10 p.m., causing a huge inconvenience for all of us. The buses should run at least till midnight, now that the government is extending Bangalore’s night life to 1 a.m.

Once I was returning home after a dinner with my colleagues. At 10.20 pm I missed the last bus from Brigade Road to Shivaji Nagar. As the auto drivers were demanding exorbitant prices, I decided to walk to the Shivaji Nagar Bus Stand. Despite that I missed the last bus home.

Eventually, I ended up paying Rs.200 to get home in an auto. I felt cheated and I know that many of us face the same problem.

Many cities in India and around the world have 24X7 public transport, which is a lifeline to the cities. It is an essential facility for a city like Bangalore which is now on the world map.

In July 2013, the BMTC had promised to introduce night buses in Bangalore, but it is still not a reality. I’ve written several mails to BMTC so far there has been no response.  We need to get together to make this happen.

Join me in asking the MD of BMTC to ensure that the night service buses are started as he promised several  months ago.

Dear Friends, I appreciate your petition requesting for extending the Bus services till mid night. We understand that in a metropolitan city like Bangalore, people do commute till late night and hence, there is a genuine demand from all of you. Assessing the requirement of our commuters, we have already initiated action, about 8 months back, to reschedule about 20% of our Volvo services and extended their services up to 1130 pm. This is besides 70 odd night service buses, which ply exclusively at night, catering to some of the important hubs in the city. We would be happy to extend more number of buses till midnight, which would ensure safe and comfortable travel to the commuters but we do have certain limitations, the foremost being shortage of crew members, if not the buses. Yet, we have tried to introduce split service buses, which only runs during the peak morning hours and peak evening hours, some of which continue till late night. We also need to look at the safety and security measures in our buses, specially for women passengers. We are positive and would definitely come up to the expectation of our Commuters shortly. Thanks, Pushkar
